At least 11 people were killed and eight injured after a minibus taxi and a truck collided in South Africa, government officials said on Thursday.

Xinhua quoted South African Broadcasting Corporation quoted ALS Paramedics, a local emergency service saying that 11 people, including one child, were declared dead at the scene after a truck veered off the road pinning a minibus taxi against a tree. Eight others sustained critical injuries and were taken to the hospital for urgent medical treatment.

ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said the incident took place at around 7:30 am in the eastern KwaZulu-Natal province.

The officials said an investigation has been initiated to determine the cause of the accident.

This comes just over a week after a head-on crash between a minibus taxi and a truck killed 14 schoolchildren. Police said the minibus driver had crashed into the lorry after attempting to overtake two vehicles. He was later taken into police custody.

There have been several incident of fatal road collisions in South Africa, due to factors such as rampant speeding, reckless driving and poorly maintained vehicles.

According to BBC, 11,418 people died in crashes in 2025 – about 6% lower than a year earlier but still equivalent to an average of 31 deaths a day.
