An Indian student was killed in a road accident near Chicago in the United States late Saturday night, while several others sustained injuries in the collision.

The accident took place on Interstate 65 near Crown Point in Lake County, Indiana.

The deceased student was identified as 25-year-old Navya Gadusu.

Local media reports, cited by news agency PTI, said Gadusu was pronounced dead at 12.16 am on Sunday by the Lake County Coroner’s office.

The coroner’s office stated that the cause of death was blunt force traumatic injuries suffered during the motor vehicle accident.

News agency ANI quoted Indiana State Police and CBS News as saying that the crash occurred around 11.15 pm on the northbound lanes of Interstate 65, roughly a mile south of the Crown Point exit.

Responding officers found a car blocking the centre and right lanes of the highway, while a red minivan involved in the crash had veered off the roadway and landed in a ditch on the right side.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the red minivan was carrying seven adults and was travelling at an unusually slow speed of about 10 to 15 mph while following another vehicle experiencing mechanical problems.

Police said the driver of another car failed to realise how slowly the minivan was moving and attempted to swerve left to avoid a collision.

However, the vehicle struck the left side of the minivan, forcing it off the road and into a ditch.

Authorities clarified that the vehicle suffering from mechanical issues was not directly involved in the crash.

Four of those injured were initially taken to nearby hospitals before being transferred to medical facilities in the Chicago area for further treatment.

Investigators also found that the minivan had only two front seats installed.

Police said the remaining five passengers were seated on boxes of mangos without seat belts at the time of the accident.

Authorities are continuing their investigation into the crash.

The Indian Consulate General in Chicago confirmed the death of the Indian student and expressed condolences to the family.

In a statement posted on X, the Consulate said, “We are deeply saddened by the tragic passing away of Indian student Navya Gadusu in a road accident near Chicago. Our heartfelt condolences to her family and friends during this difficult time."

The Consulate added that it is in touch with the family of the deceased, as well as friends and members of the Indian community who are helping those injured in the accident.
