At least 33 people were injured, including three minors, after a bomb exploded at a nightclub in Trujillo, a city on Peru’s northern coast, authorities said on Saturday.
The blast occurred in the early hours at the Dali nightclub, according to a statement from the local Emergency Operations Center. Emergency services rushed the injured to nearby hospitals following the explosion.
Health officials said five of the victims are in serious condition. Gerardo Florián Gómez, executive director of the Trujillo Health Network, told reporters that several people suffered severe injuries, including amputations and shrapnel wounds, and are currently undergoing surgery.
Among those injured were three minors, a 16-year-old and two 17-year-olds, Gómez added.
Authorities have not yet identified those responsible for the attack, and the motive behind the bombing remains unclear.
The incident comes less than a month after another explosion in Trujillo that damaged 25 homes, though no injuries or deaths were reported in that case.
Trujillo lies in the La Libertad region, which has recently seen a surge in violence linked to organized crime, extortion and illegal mining activities. The Andean part of the region is home to Peru’s largest gold-producing area, making it a hotspot for criminal groups seeking to control mining operations.
Official figures show the region recorded 286 explosions in 2025, including 136 in Trujillo alone, highlighting the growing security challenges facing authorities.
