A high-level summit in Kandahar has signalled the end of sanctuary for the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan on Afghan soil as Afghanistan moved to defuse regional tensions.
In a decisive and historic shift in regional security, the Afghan Supreme Leader issued a stringent decree aimed at dismantling the presence of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) on Afghan soil.
Emerging from a secret, high-level summit in Kandahar, the directive stated that the Afghan Prime Minister must search out and immediately detain every “illegal foreigner", with specific emphasis on TTP members. This is intended to ensure that Afghanistan no longer serves as a launchpad for cross-border attacks against Pakistan or any other neighbouring state.
IS THIS CHINA’S INFLUENCE?
Recent actions by the Taliban leadership appear to be a tactical response to immense and sustained pressure from Pakistan.
For years, Pakistan has viewed the TTP as an “existential threat" due to its persistent cross-border strikes and has repeatedly urged the Taliban to dismantle their sanctuaries. To compel this shift, Islamabad has employed a range of aggressive tools, including diplomatic ultimatums, large-scale deportations, the closure of vital border crossings, and targeted airstrikes.
According to top intelligence sources, regional heavyweights, most notably China, are believed to have exerted significant influence. This raises questions on the Supreme Leader’s recent optics being a result of genuine policy change or a calculated necessity to maintain regional negotiations.
The sources told News18 that in a demonstration of the decree’s severity, Afghan authorities have begun rounding up TTP fighters who once enjoyed an unchallenged safe haven. Crucially, the crackdown has not spared the Taliban’s own ranks as a group of disciplined Afghan Taliban fighters, who had crossed into Pakistan alongside TTP militants, were also arrested and brought back to face consequences.
By detaining their own personnel, the sources said, the leadership is signalling a fundamental shift: former militant alliances, once seen as ideological assets, have now become “dangerous liabilities" that threaten the stability of the state. The once-favourable environment for the TTP is rapidly evaporating.
Internal sources within the TTP have acknowledged that their former protectors now view them as a burden, leading many insurgents to go underground as they feel “the walls of their former sanctuary closing in". This marks the first time in four years that the Afghan Taliban has openly and actively confronted the very group it previously tolerated.
This crackdown represents a significant turning point for the Afghan Taliban as it prioritises national stability and the avoidance of open conflict over old insurgent ties. By actively confronting its former associates, the Taliban government is attempting to ease immediate Pakistani retaliation and prevent a broader escalation into regional warfare.
