Prime Minister Narendra Modi just concluded his Sweden visit as part of the third leg of his five-nation Europe-West Asia tour. The visit to Gothenburg is Modi’s first trip to Sweden since the 2018 India-Nordic Summit and signals a renewed effort to strengthen relations between the two countries.

Following his meetings with Swedish leaders, PM Modi said several important outcomes had emerged from the discussions.

“My visit to Sweden was marked by several important outcomes that will add new momentum to India-Sweden relations," PM Modi wrote in a post on X.

He also thanked the people and government of Sweden, along with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, for their “warmth and friendship".

India-Sweden relations elevated

One of the biggest announcements during the visit was the elevation of India-Sweden bilateral ties to the level of a Strategic Partnership.

The two countries also adopted a Joint Statement and a Joint Action Plan for the 2026-2030 period.

According to the official outcomes shared during the visit, the partnership is expected to improve economic and security resilience between the two nations.

The cooperation framework has been organised under four main pillars. These include strategic dialogue for stability and security, next-generation economic partnership, emerging technologies and trusted connectivity, and collaboration focused on people, sustainability and resilience.

Officials said the agreement would strengthen cooperation in economic, technological, connectivity and sustainability-related sectors.

Joint innovation partnership

India and Sweden also launched the India-Sweden Joint Innovation Partnership 2.0 during the visit.

As part of the initiative, the two countries will establish a virtual India-Sweden Joint Science and Technology Centre (ISJSTC).

The new framework aims to deepen collaboration in emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, 6G, quantum computing, sustainable mining, critical minerals, space research and life sciences.

The partnership will also build upon existing cooperation in renewable energy, battery and energy storage, energy transmission, smart grid technologies, smart cities and resilient water systems.

Focus on AI and technology

Another key outcome from the visit was the decision to jointly develop the India-Sweden Technology and Artificial Intelligence Corridor, also known as SITAC.

The initiative is aimed at strengthening long-term cooperation in artificial intelligence, innovation, technology and digital transformation.

Officials said the corridor would encourage stronger partnerships between industries, startups and research institutions working in advanced technology sectors.

The move reflects growing interest from both countries in expanding cooperation in future-oriented technologies.

Double trade in 5 years

India and Sweden have also set an ambitious target of doubling bilateral trade and investment within the next five years.

The decision is expected to create fresh opportunities for businesses and industries in both countries.

The initiative will also support India’s “Make in India" programme and improve trade facilitation mechanisms.

Both sides also agreed to continue regular discussions related to Intellectual Property Rights.

Modi described the discussions as “highly productive" and said the outcomes would add “new energy and momentum" to ties between the two countries.

SME and startup cooperation

The two countries also agreed to develop an India-Sweden SME and Start-up Platform.

The platform is expected to strengthen the startup and innovation ecosystem and create more employment opportunities, especially for young people.

The initiative is aimed at encouraging cooperation between small and medium-sized businesses from both nations.

Cultural ties

India and Sweden also announced the institution of the “Tagore-Sweden" Lecture Series under the theme “Vikas Bhi Virasat Bhi".

The initiative is intended to strengthen cultural and intellectual engagement between the two countries.

Officials said the lecture series would also help advance India’s soft power and encourage stronger people-to-people relations.

In another post on X, Modi said the outcomes of the visit would contribute towards building “a more prosperous and forward-looking planet".
