Mykhailo Polyakov’s attempt to film the isolated Sentinelese tribe using a rubber dinghy and a can of Diet Coke ends in a legal nightmare

American YouTuber Faces 5 Years In Jail For Offering 'Diet Coke' To The World's Most Isolated Tribe
For travel vloggers, the line between “content" and “crime" can often feel blurry but for YouTuber Mykhailo Viktorovych Polyakov, that line has turned into a prison cell. Known to his followers as the creator of Neo Orientalist, Polyakov’s adventure in the Andamans didn’t end with millions of views, but with a rejected bail petition in Port Blair.
Who Is Mykhailo Viktorovych Polyakov?
On the morning of March 29, 2025, then 24-year-old American named Mykhailo Viktorovych Polyakov briefly set foot on one of the most forbidden places on Earth: North Sentinel Island. Home to the elusive and uncontacted Sentinelese tribe, the island is off-limits under Indian law — not just to protect outsiders from potential danger, but to protect the tribe from the world. Polyakov’s landing, captured on a GoPro camera later recovered by authorities, was short-lived: an hour offshore, a few offerings left behind — coconuts, cans of Diet Coke — and a whistle blown into the dense jungle.

Polyakov is no stranger to danger, having filmed in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan. However, the Sentinelese are famously unwelcoming. Having filmed his journey for a vlog-style video, Polyakov essentially handed the authorities the evidence needed to convict him. With his judicial custody extended and his bail rejected, he faces up to five years in prison. He is scheduled to appear in court again on April 29.
Polyakov isn’t the first person to try and visit this remote island in India’s Andaman archipelago. You must have also heard about an American man, Evangelical missionary John Allen Chau, who tried to make illegal contact with the Sentinelese tribe in the Andaman Islands off the coast of India, back in 2018. He wanted to turn them into Christians, but got more than he bargained for. He was killed by the tribe, which has, for centuries, fended off all attempts of contact from the outside world. Anyone who has tried to bypass their desires has met a tragic end.
