A 22-year-old Bangladeshi man is in critical condition after being shot by police in Queens, New York, in an incident the police say occurred after he threatened officers with a large kitchen knife.

The New York City Police Department (NYPD) said Jabez Chakraborty, who suffers from mental health issues, had been following officers while waving the knife as they tried to retreat.

Officers only drew their guns after he posed an immediate threat, the department told The New York Post on Saturday.

The shooting reportedly took place last Monday after Chakraborty’s family called 911, expecting medical help for the young man, who was reportedly “throwing glass against the wall" in their Briarwood home. The family said they did not anticipate the police would arrive alongside emergency medical responders.

According to the NYPD, officers asked for permission to enter the apartment, which the family granted. Police said that lethal force was only used after Chakraborty allegedly grabbed a knife and threatened them.

Chakraborty remains hospitalised on a ventilator under police guard. He has been indicted by the Queens District Attorney for attempted murder, although his family is calling on prosecutors not to press charges.

In a statement, the family condemned the police response, saying they had called 911 solely for an ambulance and were shocked that officers shot their son multiple times. They also criticised NYPD officers for restricting hospital access, interrogating them, and confiscating their phones.

“We are demanding that the Queens DA not press charges against our son. We demand to know, why did the NYPD come when we asked for an ambulance? Why is the NYPD posted outside of our son’s hospital room while he is on a ventilator?"

The statement further added, “Why did the NYPD take our phones through manipulation and without cause? Why have we been dehumanized, disrespected, and treated like criminals all while the NYPD were the ones who came and shot our son as if they came expressly to kill him?"
