A person was hospitalized in critical condition after being shot on Tuesday (January 27) in an incident involving US Border Patrol in southern Arizona, authorities said, according to NBC News.

The shooting took place at about 7:30 a.m. near milepost 15 on West Arivaca Road in Pima County, according to a statement from the Santa Rita Fire District.

Pima County Sheriff’s Office personnel were on the scene and are working with the FBI as part of an ongoing investigation, sheriff’s officials said.

Medical response and transport

Fire and medical crews from the Santa Rita Fire District and American Medical Response treated the individual at the scene before transferring them to a regional trauma center by medical helicopter, the fire district said in a news release, the news outlet stated.

Officials have not released the victim’s identity or provided details about what led to the shooting. The circumstances surrounding the incident are still under active investigation by law enforcement agencies, the fire department added.

Federal law enforcement involvement

The Pima County Sheriff’s Office confirmed it was coordinating with the Federal Bureau of Investigation following the shooting, a standard procedure for incidents involving federal law enforcement officers.

At this time, it is not clear whether the shots were fired by Border Patrol agents, local law enforcement, or another party. No statements have been issued by US Customs and Border Protection or the Department of Homeland Security, and no arrests have been announced.

Context of enforcement activity

The incident comes amid broader scrutiny of US immigration enforcement, as federal agencies have been conducting heightened operations in border regions. In recent weeks, controversial shootings by and involving immigration enforcement officials elsewhere in the United States have drawn public attention and protests.
