Canada Wildfires: New York City and surrounding areas were placed under an air quality alert as smoke from massive wildfires raging across Canada spreads into parts of the northeastern United States. The alert- which is in effect from 11 am to 11 pm on Wednesday- was issued after smoke drifting from active fires in Manitoba, Alberta and Saskatchewan led to diminished air quality in several US states.

The advisory covers New York City and nearby counties including Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster, and Westchester, as per CBS News.

Canada Wildfires Prompt Mass Evacuations

Canada is currently battling an intense wildfire season, with more than 3.4 million acres (1.4 million hectares) already burned nationwide. Over 27,000 residents have been forced to evacuate across the three hardest-hit provinces. Manitoba has declared a state of emergency, and in the city of Flin Flon alone, more than 5,000 people have been relocated.

Health Concerns As Air Quality Deteriorates

The smoke pushed the Air Quality Index (AQI) in New York to levels categorized as “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups" with AQI expected to reach 105. Authorities issue alerts when the AQI exceeds 100, warning individuals- especially those with respiratory conditions, children, and the elderly- to take precautions.

Ongoing Concern As Wildfires Rage

The US Environmental Protection Agency and local health departments urged residents in affected areas to limit outdoor activities and use air purifiers or masks when necessary.
