Greenland’s government on Monday said it would not accept a takeover of the Arctic island by the United States under any circumstances, while reaffirming its commitment to strengthening its defences and increasing cooperation within NATO.

In a statement, the government of the autonomous Danish territory said Washington had once again expressed interest in taking control of Greenland, a move it firmly rejected. “The United States has reiterated its desire to take over Greenland. This is something the governing coalition cannot accept under any circumstance," the statement said.

The remarks come amid repeated comments by US President Donald Trump, who has previously suggested bringing Greenland under US control, citing strategic and security interests in the Arctic.

While rejecting any change in sovereignty, Greenland’s government said it would continue working to enhance the island’s defence and security within a NATO framework, underscoring cooperation with allies rather than unilateral control.
