President Donald Trump boasted during a phone interview with Fox News on Thursday that “no Republicans ever gotten the gay vote like I did,” and critics were quick to suggest otherwise.
“I think I did very well with the gay vote. I even played the gay national anthem as my walk-off,” Trump said on Fox News’ “The Five.”
Trump was seemingly referring to the song “Y.M.C.A.” by the Village People, which he has frequently used during his rallies and campaign events.
He also suggested that he had secured the “gay vote” because he “was from New York City.”
Critics on social media were quick to roast Trump for his comments, pointing out that he likely did not get the “gay vote.”
Trump: I think I did very well with the gay vote, okay? I even played the gay national anthem as my walk-off. No Republican got the gay vote like I did. Perhaps it’s because I’m from NYC. pic.twitter.com/xPM38Wl3yk
— Acyn (@Acyn) March 26, 2026Just because Scott Pressler and Lindsey Graham voted for you doesn't mean Trump has the Gay vote.
— Denison Barb (@DenisonBarbs) March 26, 2026No, Trump.
I am pretty sure that gay people really hate your guts.
And I actually live in New York City, where nobody here likes you.
Not even other republicans.
How anyone who is gay can vote for this asshole is a mystery to me.
— Jo (@JoJoFromJerz) March 26, 2026Lolz. Sorry, but CPAC overloading the Grinder server doesn’t count as getting the gay vote.

— (((The Taiji Reporter)))🐬🇺🇦 (@TheTaijiNews) March 26, 2026As a gay man, can someone explain to me what the gay national anthem is? I am not familiar with this song, youd think I would be.
— Malik (@trikortreater) March 26, 2026What is the Gay National Anthem? Is there one? Is it YMCA?
— 𝑀𝑒𝑙𝑖𝑠𝑠𝑎 (@MeliMels99) March 26, 2026MAGA must be big mad since they insist we only have one national anthem
— Cork Off! (@CorkYou) March 26, 2026Despite Trump’s claims, an NBC exit poll from the 2024 presidential election found that a majority of voters who identify as LGBT voted for former Vice President Kamala Harris by a margin of 86% to 12%. The numbers represent the strongest showing for a Democratic candidate among LGBT voters in the last five presidential elections.
