US President Donald Trump had told the then-Florida police chief in 2006 that “everyone" knew about Jeffrey Epstein’s behaviour, according to newly released FBI documents related to the late convicted child sex offender, made public by the US Justice Department late last month.

The document is a summary of a 2019 FBI interview with the former Palm Beach police chief, identified as Michael Reiter. His name is partly redacted in the file, but the details match his role at the time, as per BBC report.

Reiter said Trump called him in July 2006 after Palm Beach police began investigating Epstein for the alleged sexual exploitation of underage girls. According to the FBI record, Trump told the former police chief, “Thank goodness you’re stopping him, everyone has known he’s been doing this."

Reiter also told investigators that Trump said he had thrown Epstein out of his Mar-a-Lago club and that “people in New York knew he was disgusting".

The former chief claimed Trump called Ghislaine Maxwell as Epstein’s “operative" and said “she is evil and to focus on her". Maxwell was convicted in 2021 for her role in luring underage girls for Epstein.

According to the document, Reiter said Trump told him he had been around Epstein when he was with teenagers but “got the hell out of there". He also said Trump was one of the “very first people to call" police when he learned of the investigation.

Trump has consistently denied any wrongdoing linked to Epstein and has said he was not aware of his crimes. He has previously said their friendship ended after he learned Epstein had tried to “steal" employees from Mar-a-Lago.

In 2006, the Palm Beach case was later handed to federal prosecutors. In 2008, Epstein secured a controversial plea deal that shielded him from more serious federal charges.

Epstein, a wealthy financier with powerful connections, was accused of abusing young girls. He died by suicide by hanging in a New York prison in 2019 while awaiting trial.

The newly released FBI document is part of a wider batch of more than three million Epstein-related files that were made public last month.
