A Hindu trader was beaten to death by a mob in Bangladesh’s Kaliganj area after he stepped in to defend an employee during a dispute at his shop, police said.

The victim, identified as Liton Chandra Das, owned a small hotel and sweet shop in the locality.

The incident took place on Saturday morning following an argument between a customer and Ananta Das, an employee at Liton’s shop.

As tensions rose, Liton intervened to protect his staff member. However, the situation quickly spiralled, with several people turning on him.

According to local accounts, the group initially assaulted Liton with punches and kicks before attacking him with a shovel. He sustained severe injuries and died on the spot before help could arrive.

Police rushed to the area after being alerted and brought the situation under control. Three people have been detained in connection with the killing, and Liton’s body has been sent for post-mortem examination.

Authorities said an investigation is underway to establish the full sequence of events.

The killing has triggered fear and anger among local residents, who have demanded a fair probe and strict action against those responsible.

In a separate incident, a fuel station worker named Ripon Saha was crushed to death after trying to stop a vehicle from leaving a petrol pump without paying.

According to a PTI report, the incident occurred at the Karim Filling Station, where a black SUV allegedly refuelled and attempted to flee without settling the bill. When Saha tried to block the vehicle, he was run over.

Police later arrested the vehicle owner, Abul Hashem alias Sujan (55), a former treasurer of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in Rajbari district, along with his driver Kamal Hossain (43).
