As violence against minorities continues in Bangladesh, a Hindu worker was killed on Friday after being run over by an SUV driver for demanding payment for fuel at a petrol pump, according to local reports.
The incident occurred when the worker, identified as Ripon Saha (30), demanded payment for fuel at the Karim Filling Station in Rajbari. The SUV driver reportedly attempted to leave without paying and ran over the worker, killing him on the spot, according to The Daily Star.
Police later seized the vehicle and arrested its owner, Abul Hashem alias Sujan, 55, from his residence on Thursday afternoon. Police said the driver, identified as Kamal Hossain (43), was also detained.
What Happened?
Employees of the petrol pump told reporters that a black Land Cruiser arrived at the filling station early yesterday and took fuel worth 5,000 taka. When the vehicle driver attempted to leave without paying, Ripon Saha tried to stop it. The vehicle ran him over and fled the scene, leaving Ripon dead on the spot.
Police said CCTV footage from the site showed Ripon and Hashem standing beside the vehicle. After a brief pause, Hashem got into the vehicle and it suddenly tried to leave the petrol pump, prompting Ripon to chase it. Another worker, Jakir Hossain, also ran after them and found Ripon’s body on the highway with severe injuries to the head and face.
The body was sent for a post-mortem. Police said both the vehicle owner and the driver were in custody, and legal proceedings have been initiated. Hashem was identified as a former treasurer of the Rajbari district Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and former president of the district Jubo Dal, and a contractor by profession.
Violence Against Bangladeshi Hindus
The incident is the latest in a series of attacks on Hindu minorities in the country, renewing concerns over the safety and security of religious minorities. Earlier, the house of another Hindu family was targeted and set ablaze in Sylhet, causing fear among the family and the community.
Attacks against the Hindu community have increased in Bangladesh amid the country’s shifting political climate. A series of attacks against minorities has taken place since last month, with Dipu Chandra Das’s killing by a mob over blasphemy allegations, triggering protests across the world.
The attacks have further strained ties between New Delhi and Dhaka, with India last week strongly criticising the Muhammad Yunus–led interim government for attempting to whitewash the communal nature of the crimes. In response, the Yunus-led administration sought to downplay reports of the incidents, including the killings, describing them as attempts “to destroy communal harmony through false propaganda."
