Rep. Jim McGovern (D-Mass.) slammed President Donald Trump on Wednesday after he dismissed the fallout of his administration’s failure to release the so-called Jeffrey Epstein files, describing the saga as a “Democrat hoax that never ends.”

Trump — while meeting with Polish President Karol Nawrocki in the Oval Office as the convicted sex offender’s victims called for the full release of the files outside the U.S. Capitol — downplayed the press conference, declaring that the victims were discussing “something that’s totally irrelevant” to his administration’s successes.

McGovern used his time on the House floor to highlight Trump’s comments, “Now let that sink in. I mean, if you listen to the survivors that were in front of the Capitol just a few minutes ago, listen to their horror stories, that’s irrelevant?”

He continued, “I mean, that the President of the United States of America would say something like that is pathetic. And, you know, he could very easily put all this controversy to rest by just releasing the files.”

McGovern also urged fellow lawmakers to back the bipartisan efforts of Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) and Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) — who organized Wednesday’s press conference — to force the House to vote on a bill to require the Justice Department to release the files.

Later on the House floor, the congressman questioned how Americans could put their “trust” in Republicans when Trump has yet to follow through on a campaign promise to release the Epstein files.

“Stop protecting the powerful perpetrators of these crimes and just release the damn files!” he stressed.

The Epstein presser on Capitol Hill arrived after the House Oversight Committee shared thousands of documents related to Epstein late Tuesday although most of the material was already available to the public.
