As violent protests against immigrants continued in Northern Ireland on second day, police had to resort to using water cannon against the rioters.

According to The Guardian, the protesters, a group of 300 people, had burnt a truck and threw bricks and petrol bombs close to the Sandyknowes roundabout near Newtownabbey, eight miles north of Belfast. The unrest was also reported in Derry and Coleraine.

Michelle O’Neill, the first minister of Northern Ireland, described the riots as “nothing less than disgusting cowardice". “Racism, intimidation and violence are wrong wherever they occur," she said on X.

What Led To The Violent Protests?

A 30-year-old man, Hadi Alodid a Sudanese refugee, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a brutal knife attack in north Belfast. The incident took place at around 10.30pm (local time) on Monday.

The incident quickly became a flashpoint for wider tensions surrounding immigration, prompting demonstrations that later escalated into violence.

According to AFP, politicians, social media and far-right agitators have convinced people that migrant-targeting violence would solve all their problems.

Interestingly, these opinion have also been supported by Elon Musk, owner of X. Hehad shared posts about the attack, including one from far-right activist Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, known as Tommy Robinson, calling for nationwide protests. He also shared posts from right-wing British politicians Rupert Lowe and Matt Goodwin blaming immigration for the attack, and separately amplified a list of 70 locations for flash protests, writing that “only by protesting REPEATEDLY and LOUDLY will there be any change."

AFP reported that within hours of Monday night’s attack, several posts appeared on social media with comments like “Enough is enough!"

During the protests, some gave slogans “Foreigners out!" while some spraypainted “fuck Islam", with crosshairs, on walls, the UK media outlet reported.

Outside Belfast, mobs torched targets in Portadown, Dundonald and Newtownabbey. The fire service received 256 calls and attended 62 incidents.
