Initial clinical assessments suggest that the infection may be a Central Retinal Vein Occlusion---a serious condition that can impair vision if not treated promptly

Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan
Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan is reportedly experiencing a significant deterioration in his health while being held in solitary confinement at Adiala Jail, a top jail source has confirmed to CNN-News18. Khan has been in isolation since December 2, 2025—nearly 55 days—with no contact with family members or lawyers, according to the source.
The top source, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed that Khan is currently suffering from a severe eye infection and allergic reactions, exacerbated by the harsh, dry cold weather conditions in the Rawalpindi-Islamabad region. Initial clinical assessments by a medical team from the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) suggest that the infection may be a Central Retinal Vein Occlusion (CRVO)—a serious condition that can impair vision if not treated promptly.
A medical delegation from PIMS visited Khan in Adiala Jail on Saturday, January 24, and conducted a preliminary examination of his condition. According to medical personnel, the former prime minister requires a comprehensive eye examination and specialised treatment beyond what is currently available within the prison facility. The doctors have initiated initial treatment, but a full evaluation and follow-up care are urgently needed. The next scheduled monthly medical assessment is due on January 31, the source added.
The difficult conditions in the region, marked by a persistent dry cold wave, have reportedly worsened Khan’s symptoms. The source attributed the eye infection and allergy flare-ups partly to these weather stresses.
Since his confinement began in early December, Khan has been denied meetings with family members and legal counsel, a situation that has drawn mounting criticism from his political party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and relatives. His sisters, in particular, have been vocal in demanding access to him, expressing deep concern over his deteriorating health and the emotional toll of prolonged isolation.
In several interviews, Imran Khan’s sister has stressed her brother’s resilience but reiterated fears about the impact of solitary confinement on his physical and mental wellbeing. She described his resolve as “unbroken" while also urging authorities to allow proper medical care and family visits.
At present, authorities have not officially commented on Khan’s medical condition or the ongoing demands by his family and party supporters. The Islamabad-Rawalpindi area continues to experience cold, dry weather, which prison sources say is complicating general health management for detainees.
As the scheduled medical review at the end of January approaches, questions are intensifying over access to adequate healthcare for high-profile inmates and the broader implications for Pakistan’s political atmosphere ahead of upcoming developments.
