A foreign traveller’s claim that she felt safer using her phone in India has triggered strong reactions online

‘India Safer Than London?’ Viral Video Gets People Arguing About What Safety Really Looks Like
A viral video showing a foreign traveller casually using her phone in public spaces across India has sparked a global debate on urban safety, with many now asking whether cities like Mumbai feel safer than places like London.
The clip, titled ‘Me with my phone in India vs…’, has been widely shared across social media. It shows the woman walking through busy streets, filming freely, holding her phone loosely and even leaving it unattended on a café table while adjusting her bag. It’s a small detail, but one that’s caught attention.
The caption is what really pushed the video into viral territory. In it she says, “I know this might shock people… but I actually felt less stressed about my phone in India than I do in London." She adds that she had been warned to be careful in India, but felt more at ease here than in London, where she claims her phone would have likely been snatched within seconds.
That comparison has struck a nerve.
In London, phone snatching has become a growing concern, with organised thefts, especially by bike gangs, reported in several areas. In some parts of the city, phones are stolen frequently enough to be considered a routine risk.
In contrast, while Indian cities continue to face their own safety challenges, especially around issues like petty crime and women’s safety, this specific type of fast, organised phone snatching is not as commonly reported in many urban areas like Mumbai or Bengaluru.
The video has divided people online.
Some people watching the video agreed with her right away. They shared their own experiences, saying they’d felt more relaxed about things like phone theft in India. Others weren’t convinced. They felt the comparison was too broad, pointing out that safety can change a lot depending on the city, the neighbourhood and even the time of day.
The comments reflected that split pretty clearly.
Some users said they’d had phones stolen in London but never faced that issue in India. Others questioned the whole comparison, saying it doesn’t make sense to judge two places like that without looking at the bigger picture.
