An Indian restaurant in Minneapolis has paused operations amid rising fears linked to an immigration crackdown in the city. Curry Corner said it took the difficult decision to shut temporarily to ensure the safety of its staff during the ongoing action by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The restaurant announced the decision on Instagram, citing safety concerns for its team members.

In its statement, Curry Corner said it “will be closing down until further notice" and thanked people for their understanding and support. “Due to ongoing safety concerns in Minneapolis, we’ve made the very difficult decision to temporarily close to protect our team," the restaurant wrote.

ICE operation sparks tension

The ICE crackdown in Minneapolis is part of “Operation Metro Surge", which was launched in December 2025. The operation has led to protests and rising tensions in the city. Many residents have criticised it, describing it as a “militarised" crackdown.

The restaurant’s post reached thousands of users on social media. Many described Curry Corner as the “best" and their “favourite", and shared messages of support.

One user wrote, “Sending so much love to you guys – the northeast community will make sure we will see you again soon." Another said, “This is our favourite regular dinner spot. We will be back to support when you can safely open back up."

Financial hardship and fundraiser

The closure has caused financial difficulties for both the staff and the owners. The restaurant said the decision has brought “major financial hardship" to the small, family-owned business.

To help during this period, a GoFundMe fundraiser has been set up. “Every share, donation, and message means more than you know," the restaurant said in its post.

Free food for protesters

Despite the closure, Curry Corner has continued to support the community. The owners distributed free samosas and meals to anti-ICE protesters in downtown Minneapolis.

“Today we took Curry Corner into downtown Minneapolis to support our community," the restaurant wrote in another post. “We went out to share warm samosas and meals with those protesting and standing up for what they believe in."

The restaurant ended its message with words of solidarity. “Our hearts are with our community. We see you, we support you, and we will always show up the best way we know how – with love and food."
