The Israeli military has said two soldiers will serve 30 days of military detention and be removed from combat duty after they damaged a statue of Jesus Christ in southern Lebanon, an incident that drew widespread condemnation.

The action follows a video and images circulating online showing an Israeli soldier using a sledgehammer to strike the head of a fallen statue of the crucified Christ in the Christian village of Debel, near the Israeli border.

In its findings, the military said the soldier who carried out the act and another who filmed it would both be punished and removed from active combat roles. Six other soldiers present at the scene have been called in for disciplinary discussions for failing to stop or report the incident.
