Former US President Barack Obama revealed that his vocal opposition to Donald Trump led to “genuine tension" in his marriage with former First Lady Michelle Obama. In an interview with The New Yorker, Barack Obama said Donald Trump’s presidency drew him back into active political engagement more than he had anticipated. He admitted that he initially believed institutional checks- including the Constitution and norms of the presidency- would constrain Donald Trump but those expectations were quickly overturned.

Barack Obama said the early phase of Donald Trump’s presidency, particularly policies like proposed restrictions on Muslim entry into the United States and expanded immigration detention efforts, intensified pressure on him to respond publicly.

That pressure, he noted, spilled over into his personal life.

“It does create a genuine tension in our household, and it frustrates her," Barack Obama said, referring to Michelle Obama’s reaction to his continued political involvement.

He added that Michelle Obama would prefer him to step back and spend more time enjoying life after the presidency.

“She wants to see her husband easing up and spending more time with her, enjoying what remains of our lives," he said.

Barack Obama also reflected on the unique expectations placed on him as a former US President, noting that few of his predecessors remained as politically active for as long. He said he understands why people expect him to speak out, even as it comes at a personal cost.

The former US President has previously spoken about the toll public life has taken on his family, including the pressures faced by Michelle and their daughters.

Despite largely avoiding direct criticism of Donald Trump during his presidency, Barack Obama has occasionally responded to remarks and attacks from his successor, including conspiracy theories and derogatory content shared online.
