Castillo had been on the run for nearly a decade. As per the official statement by FBI, he was seen on surveillance video crossing the border from Nogales, Arizona, into Mexico, on August 16, 2016.

He was added to the Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list on October 24, 2017. Castillo allegedly murdered the Charlotte, North Carolina resident, 23-year-old Truc Quan “Sandy" Ly Le. Her body was found on August 17, 2016, in a wooded area in Cabarrus County.

Upon his arrest, FBI co-ordinated with Mexican authorities to transfer Castillo to law enforcement custody in Charlotte. Patel hailed the transfer while addressing media regarding the arrest of former Canadian Olympic snowboarder Ryan Wedding.

Wedding, a former Canadian Olympic snowboarder turned suspected cocaine smuggling kingpin, was arrested on Friday.
