FBI director Kash Patel has strongly denied allegations that he drank to excess and was at times unreachable during his tenure, following a new report that has triggered a fierce public response and legal threats.
Patel has vowed to sue The Atlantic over the article published on Friday, which detailed claims of heavy drinking, erratic behaviour, and instances in which members of his security detail allegedly struggled to wake him.
He dismissed the report as false and politically motivated, insisting it amounted to “fake news" and saying he would meet the publication in court.
“See you and your entire entourage of false reporting in court," Patel wrote on X on Saturday, calling the story a “legal layup" under the actual malice standard.
In another post, he said: “The only time I’ll ever actually be concerned about the hit piece lies you write about me will be when you stop."
He added that criticism would not deter his leadership of the bureau. “Keep talking, it means I’m doing exactly what I should be doing. And no amount of BS you write will ever deter this FBI from making America safe again and taking down the criminals you love."
The allegations come amid broader scrutiny of Patel’s conduct in office. He has previously faced criticism over early social media posts about active investigations, use of a government aircraft for personal travel, and attending sporting events in Europe while on official trips.
What The Atlantic Report Alleged?
The Atlantic report, citing more than two dozen current and former officials, alleges episodes of “freak-outs", unexplained absences, and what sources described as obvious intoxication in private settings in Washington and Las Vegas.
According to the article, some officials said Patel’s behaviour had disrupted scheduling, with early morning meetings reportedly moved due to recovery from late-night drinking. Others claimed aides and security personnel had difficulty waking him on multiple occasions, including an incident where staff allegedly considered using breaching equipment after being unable to reach him behind locked doors.
The report also raised concerns within parts of the US Justice Department and White House, with unnamed officials questioning his ability to respond effectively in a major crisis. One source cited fears over how he would handle a domestic terrorist attack, calling the situation “deeply concerning".
It further claimed that some staff were expecting his eventual removal, though President Donald Trump has publicly defended Patel in the past.
