Mali’s Defence Minister, General Sadio Camara, was killed in a car bomb attack outside his home on Saturday, as the country grapples with escalating violence. The attack also claimed the lives of Camara’s second wife and two grandchildren, family and government sources confirmed on Sunday.

The bombing took place in the junta stronghold of Kati, located just outside the capital, Bamako. Camara was one of several senior officials living in Kati, which has long been a key military and political hub for Mali’s ruling junta.

The car bomb was reportedly left outside his residence by a group affiliated with Al-Qaeda.

The strike on Camara’s home is part of a broader, coordinated assault launched by jihadist and rebel groups across the country on Saturday. The violence saw coordinated attacks in multiple locations, including Kati, Kidal, and Gao.

The Tuareg rebels, part of the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), and the jihadist group Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), which is affiliated with Al-Qaeda, were behind the onslaught.
