A day after a fire tragedy at a Bed and Breakfast (B&B) in Delhi’s Malviya Nagar area killed 21 people, including 12 foreigners, Canada and the UAE have expressed condolences.
Most of the victims were those who had either come for medical treatment or were accompanying patients of a private hospital nearby.
In a post on X, Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand said: “Deeply saddened by the tragic fire that claimed at least 21 lives and injured many others in Malviya Nagar, New Delhi."
“Canada stands with India during this devastating time, and I extend my deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those affected," she said while adding that she has expressed Canada’s solidarity to her Indian counterpart S Jaishankar.
The UAE Foreign Minister had on Wednesday extended condolences. “The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has expressed its solidarity with the Republic of India following a fire at a hotel in Malviya Nagar, New Delhi, which resulted in a number of deaths and injuries," it said in an official statement.
The UAE wished for the speedy recovery of the injured, it added.
The accused, Lovkesh Bajaj, was arrested on Wednesday evening by the Delhi Police from Saket. On Thursday, a Delhi court on Thursday called the arrest lawful and granted police four days’ custody of the accused for further investigation.
During an interrogation, Bajaj reportedly told police that he had expanded the number of rooms in the establishment to grow his business. The B&B had the license for only six rooms but operated guests in 25 rooms.
According to police sources, initial investigations have pointed to a short circuit in the building’s internal wiring as the likely cause of the blaze, ruling out the possibility of an LPG cylinder explosion.
