The latest incident involved the Palau-flagged tanker Settebello, which was struck by a US missile while operating off Sohar in the Gulf of Oman.

The US Central Command released footage of a missile strike on oil tanker Settebello.
The United States military has released a video capturing the moment when an oil tanker carrying Indians was struck by a missile near the Strait of Hormuz, triggering a fire on board.
The latest incident involved the Palau-flagged tanker Settebello, which was struck by a missile while operating off Sohar in the Gulf of Oman, according to the Ministry of External Affairs. At least three Indians were reported missing, while 21 others were rescued.
The US Central Command acknowledged its attack on the vessel, saying an aircraft fired precision munitions into the ship’s engine room after the crew repeatedly failed to comply with directions from American forces.
The incident took place just a day after the US military confirmed an attack on an oil tanker in the Gulf of Oman carrying 24 Indian crew members aboard. The MT Marivex, a Palau-flagged vessel, was operating in waters close to the strategically important Strait of Hormuz when it was hit by a projectile off the Omani coast. The crew were evacuated after the fire was reported.
Two Indians Reported Dead
The Forward Seamen’s Union of India (FSUI) said two Indians were killed while the third individual, a chief engineer, was still missing after the vessel came under attack. FSUI General Secretary Manoj Yadav told news agency ANI that the three sailors hailed from Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh.
He also alleged that the US naval forces knew the nationalities of those onboard the vessels and that they could have opted for detention if their instructions were not followed.
India Condemns Attack
India strongly condemned the attack on the tanker, saying the “continuing incidents of attacks on shipping in the region are deeply worrisome and a direct result of the ongoing conflict in the region."
“We reiterate our call for immediate de-escalation of tensions, and the conclusion of ongoing negotiations for a diplomatic solution so that peace and stability can return to the region," the MEA said in a statement.
India also summoned Jason Meeks, the United States Chargé d’Affaires in New Delhi, to lodge a formal protest over an attack on the commercial vessel. Nagaraj Naidu, Additional Secretary (Americas) in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), conveyed India’s concerns.
Speaking at the United Nations, P. Harish, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, said that several Indian nationals have lost their lives in these attacks, while some remain missing. He emphasised that nearly 10 million Indians live and work in the Gulf region, making their safety and well-being a top priority.
