Former US First Lady Michelle Obama reflected on the challenges of being married to a prominent public figure, recalling moments of being overlooked during official events while her husband, former US President Barack Obama, received all the attention.

Speaking on the latest episode of her podcast “IMO with Michelle Obama & Craig Robinson," Michelle Obama was joined by obstetrician-gynecologist Dr. Sharon Malone, the wife of former US Attorney General Eric Holder as the two talked about the pressures of being married to high-profile men.

Michelle Obama recounted an early encounter with Sharon Malone at a formal dinner, back when Barack Obama was still a US senator. She said, “There was a line of people waiting to shake hands with our respective husbands. People were reaching over our heads and spilling water on us, trying to get to these two illustrious men."

Michelle Obama said she and Sharon Malone exchanged a glance during the event, adding, “She had the same look on her face as I did, like, ‘Here we go.’"

The two also talked about reproductive health and the need to move beyond framing the issue solely around abortion. Michelle Obama said, “Sadly, it has been reduced to ‘choice’. And it’s as if that’s all of what women’s health is."

Criticising the lack of understanding among many men in positions of power, Michelle Obama said that “so many men have no idea about what women go through."

Pointing out that reproductive health is not only about pregnancy, she said, “This whole complicated reproductive system — the least of what it does is produce life. You only produce life if the machine that’s producing it is functioning in a healthy, streamlined kind of way."
