Microsoft will no longer have exclusive access to artificial intelligence models developed by OpenAI, marking a major shift in one of the most high-profile partnerships in the AI industry.

Under the revised agreement, OpenAI will be able to offer its technology across rival cloud platforms, including those operated by Amazon and Google. The move opens the door for broader distribution of OpenAI’s models and reduces Microsoft’s exclusive advantage in the rapidly evolving AI market.

Following the announcement, Microsoft shares dipped about 1% in premarket trading, reflecting investor concerns over the loss of exclusivity.

Microsoft had emerged as a major force in artificial intelligence after its early investment in OpenAI, integrating advanced AI tools into products across its ecosystem. However, tensions have grown between the two companies as OpenAI expanded its partnerships and explored deals with competing cloud providers.

Earlier reports suggested Microsoft had even considered legal action over a large cloud agreement involving OpenAI and Amazon, amid concerns it could violate the original exclusivity terms.

Despite the changes, Microsoft will remain OpenAI’s primary cloud partner and will retain a license to the company’s intellectual property through 2032. The tech giant will also no longer be required to share revenue with OpenAI under the updated terms.

Additionally, OpenAI’s products will continue to launch first on Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform, unless Microsoft chooses not to deploy certain capabilities or is unable to do so.

The restructuring reflects a more flexible partnership model as both companies navigate the competitive and fast-growing AI landscape, where collaboration and competition increasingly overlap.
