Journalism and teaching, once regarded as noble professions in the service of humanity, now face the risk of being replaced by artificial intelligence (AI), according to a recent study by Microsoft. The research has identified at least 40 occupations that could potentially be overtaken by AI in the near future.

The advent of ChatGPT and other AI-powered chatbots has significantly simplified tasks across various industries. Yet, there remains an underlying concern about such technologies gradually displacing human workers. Microsoft’s latest study explores which roles are most susceptible to being impacted by the growing dominance of generative AI and large language models (LLMs).

The findings are particularly alarming for many, given that AI has already taken on substantial workloads in certain sectors, resulting in major restructuring, especially within the tech industry. Microsoft itself has laid off over 15,000 employees within a single year, partly due to the integration of AI technologies.

To reach these conclusions, researchers examined 200,000 anonymous and randomly selected conversations between users and Microsoft Bing Copilot. By carefully analysing these chats, the team identified the most common work-related tasks for which users sought AI assistance.

The list of 40 jobs most at risk includes interpreters, translators, historians, passenger attendants, sales representatives, writers, editors, and authors. These roles often involve language processing, communication, or repetitive content creation, areas where AI currently excels. In contrast, occupations that rely heavily on manual labour appear far less likely to face AI-driven competition. Examples include dredge operators, bridge and lock tenders, motorboat operators, roofers, and massage therapists.

While the research does not assert that AI will entirely replace certain jobs, it does serve as a warning about the shifting landscape of employment. It suggests a future in which some tasks are increasingly delegated to AI, potentially altering the nature of various professions.

Microsoft Senior Researcher Kiran Tomlinson noted in a blog post, “Our research shows that AI supports many tasks, particularly those involving research, writing, and communication, but does not indicate it can fully perform any single occupation. As AI adoption accelerates, it’s important that we continue to study and better understand its societal and economic impact."
