Ousted Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina delivered a defiant audio message on Friday during a high-profile media briefing in New Delhi by members of her erstwhile government. Speaking via an audio link during the event at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of South Asia, Hasina characterised her current status as “democracy in exile" and launched a blistering attack on the interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus.
‘Murderous Anarchy’
Hasina, who has been residing in India since her government fell in August 2024, appeared via a call but did not use video, reportedly for security reasons. Her message was a rallying cry to her supporters and a direct challenge to the legitimacy of the current administration in Dhaka.
The ‘Fascist’ Charge: Hasina described the interim administration as a “murderous, fascist clique" driven by a lust for power and betrayal. She alleged that since her conspiratorial ouster, the nation has plunged into “murderous anarchy".
Appeal to the People: Urging the citizens of Bangladesh not to “give up now", she called for the galvanisation of public support to reclaim democracy and “overthrow the foreign-serving regime at any cost".
Targeting Yunus: The former Prime Minister urged Muhammad Yunus to stop “ignoring his own people", asserting that a free and fair election is an impossibility as long as his “illegal government" remains in power.
A Government in Exile?
The briefing was attended by several senior diplomats and former ministers of the Awami League cabinet, marking the first formal, collective public appearance by members of the ousted government on Indian soil. Among those present were Hasan Mahmud, the former Foreign Minister, and Mohibul Chowdhury Nowfel, the former Education Minister.
The ministers highlighted what they termed a systemic collapse of law and order in Bangladesh. A significant portion of the briefing was dedicated to the plight of religious minorities, whom Hasina described as the “most vulnerable in society." She claimed that Hindus, Buddhists, and Christians are being “constantly targeted and attacked" under the watch of the interim authorities.
The Road to the 2026 Elections
The timing of this briefing is critical, as Bangladesh’s interim government has tentatively scheduled national elections for February 12. However, with the Awami League currently banned from participating and its top leadership in exile or facing trial in Dhaka, Hasina’s supporters have dismissed the upcoming polls as a “coronation" rather than a contest.
The Indian government has maintained a delicate diplomatic balance, providing refuge to Hasina while officially stating that her remarks are made in a personal capacity. Nevertheless, this public outreach from Delhi is likely to further strain the already fragile relationship between the Yunus-led administration and India.
