MS NOW columnist and contributor Philip Bump got emotional on Thursday while discussing Renee Nicole Good, the 37-year-old mother of three who was shot and killed by a federal immigration agent in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Bump appeared live on MS NOW moments after the network aired a heartfelt interview where reporter Alex Tabet hugged a therapist who discussed the shooting’s “painful” impact on the community. Host Chris Jansing asked Bump whether the “real” impact of the shooting can get lost in “all the political talk.”

“I think all of this can be very personal,” said Bump, who began to fight back tears before he tried to gather himself. “Look what you did to me, Chris.”

An emotional Bump referred to his 6-year-old child and noted that he was struck by an image of the glove compartment of Good’s vehicle filled with stuffed animals.

Good dropped off her 6-year-old son at school on Wednesday morning and was on her way home to her current partner before encountering federal agents on the residential street, Good’s ex-husband told The Associated Press.

“What I take away from this is, for me, that’s the thing that stands out, that this was a family that could have been like mine,” said Bump, who stressed that there are “a lot of situations” and incidents involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement that have resonated with other families in similar ways.

“For me, it’s hard to think about that family being affected in this way and I know that there are lots of other people affected in that way and I think it’s important for us to remember the way in which we respond to these things because that’s the humanity.”

He concluded, “That’s, I think, fundamental to what America is, is understanding that all of us can be in these situations and all of us should be able to avoid them, particularly when they’re so unnecessary, as the shooting yesterday was.”
