A 15-year-old attacker, reportedly linked to a banned neo-Nazi outfit, carried out a stabbing inside a dormitory of a state medical university in Russia’s Bashkortostan Republic on Saturday, February 7, injuring at least six people, including four Indian students and two police officers.
What we know about the attacker?
According to a report by the Baza Telegram channel, the teenager belonged to the violent neo-Nazi group National Socialism / White Power (NS/WP) Crew, also known as Sparrows Crew. The group was designated a terrorist organisation by the Supreme Court of Russia in 2021 and has been linked to high-profile attacks on journalists, including Anna Politkovskaya.
The report said the attacker shouted nationalist slogans about the Holocaust during the assault.
The channel reportedly also showed visuals of a Swastika drawn on a dormitory wall, reportedly in the blood of one of the victims. Ren TV quoted eyewitnesses as saying there was “blood all around" inside the building.
Bashkortostan attack
Russia’s Interior Ministry said the accused stabbed several students in the dormitory. Interior Ministry spokesperson Major General Irina Volk said the attacker resisted arrest, during which two police officers were stabbed. She added that the suspect also inflicted injuries on himself.
The Russian Federal Health Ministry said one of the injured is in serious condition, while three others are in moderate condition. The attacker has been admitted to a local children’s hospital in serious condition.
An unfortunate incident of attack has occurred in Ufa. Several persons including four Indian students have been injured. Authorities in Ufa, the capital of the Bashkortostan Republic located about 1,200 kilometres east of Moscow, have launched a high-level probe into the incident.
