Mayor Zohran Mamdani urges abolishing ICE after two killings in Minneapolis, calling raids cruel and demanding transparency.

Mamdani described the recent killings in Minneapolis as "horrific."
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Tuesday reiterated his demand to dismantle Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), condemning the agency for deadly actions that he says the public is being urged to ignore.
“ICE murdered Renee Good in broad daylight. Less than 3 weeks later, they killed Alex Pretti, shooting him 10 times," Mamdani wrote on X. “Every day, we watch as people are ripped from their cars, their homes, their lives. We can’t allow ourselves to look away from this cruelty. Abolish ICE," he further wrote. He shared the post alongside a clip from his Sunday interview on ABC’s This Week.

During the interview, Mamdani described the recent killings in Minneapolis as “horrific" accused leaders of attempting to obscure the truth. “I think it is horrific what we have seen there," he said. “There are too many Americans who are being asked to not believe their own eyes, not believe their own ears, not believe their own realities."
Referring to the killing of Renee Good’s death, Mamdani added, “That’s why I described that as a murder. There’s no other way to watch that video and come to a different conclusion." Good, a 37-year-old US citizen, was fatally shot by an ICE agent while sitting in her car on January 7, despite not being the target of the immigration operation. Her death triggered weeks of protests in Minneapolis.
Less than three weeks later, Alex Pretti, also 37, was shot multiple times by at least one Customs and Border Protection agent in a separate incident in the city last week.
Mamdani emphasised that the fear gripping Minneapolis extends far beyond the city. “It’s a fear that New Yorkers are also living with," he said, describing it as the fear of being “terrorised". He said he would do everything in his power to prevent similar incidents in New York City.
“I’ve also said clearly to the president that these ICE raids are cruel, they are inhumane, and they do nothing to serve the interests of public safety," the Mayor said.
As protests continue and investigations into the shootings proceed, Mamdani framed the situation as a matter of transparency. “People want to hear the truth," he said. “They want to see the truth." Federal officials have defended their actions, while probes into both killings remain ongoing.
