Amid a growing dispute over former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan’s health in jail, his son and political aides accused the government of “authoritarian cruelty" and governance failure.
Imran Khan’s son Kasim Khan said his father has completed 900 days in what he called a “death cell", alleging that he had been denied family visits and personal physicians despite a serious eye condition.
The Pakistan government, however, refuted the allegations and maintained that Imran was in “good health" and underwent a successful medical procedure for his eye ailment.
Kasim Khan lashed out at the government and said his father is being held without the right to speak to his family or consult doctors he trusts. He said there are credible reports that he has been diagnosed with central retinal vein occlusion, a dangerous blockage that could lead to permanent vision loss if not addressed through urgent intervention in a proper hospital.
“My father, Imran Khan, has now spent over 900 days in a death cell with no family visits and no access to his personal doctors. Credible reports confirm he has been diagnosed with central retinal vein occlusion, a dangerous blockage that can lead to permanent vision loss if not treated through urgent medical intervention in a proper hospital," Kasim wrote in a post on X. “Yet authorities continue to block his treatment and deny him the doctors he trusts. I am even denied the right to speak to him. This is not governance. This is authoritarian cruelty."

Kasim described the current state of affairs in Pakistan as a “crushing of basic human rights". He said democracy has become “hollow", calling upon international human rights defenders to act before it is too late.
“I call on every defender of human rights to act before it is too late. The world must see that in Pakistan today, democracy is hollow and basic human rights are being crushed," he added.
The opposition PTI, meanwhile, echoed these concerns with spokesperson Zulfiquar Bukhari warning that any further delay in providing specialist care could result in “irreversible harm".
Bukhari slammed the government’s narrative as “opaque and alarming", pointing out that neither Imran’s family nor his legal team was informed before or after he was recently moved from Rawalpindi’s Adiala prison to a government hospital for treatment. He said the lack of transparency regarding the doctors involved and the specific treatment administered has raised “more questions than answers", and he demanded independent medical verification and full disclosure of the former prime minister’s current state.
In contrast, the government maintained that Imran is in “good health". Information minister Attaullah Tarar said he underwent a successful 20-minute medical procedure for an eye ailment at a state hospital last week. He said the procedure was conducted with Imran’s express consent after he was examined by a team of doctors within the prison.
But the opposition remains deeply skeptical of these official assurances. Prominent PTI member Suhail Afridi questioned why the illness was initially concealed and why Imran’s health was allowed to deteriorate to the point of hospitalisation without notifying his personal doctor.
