US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Sunday said that the Trump administration welcomes Europe reducing its “dependence" on US power, insisting that the United States is “not asking Europe to be a vassal."
Speaking in Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, after attending the Munich Security Conference, Rubio said Washington wants to be a partner to Europe, not a controller. “We want to be your partner. We want to work with Europe. We want to work with our allies," he said.
Rubio’s visit to Slovakia comes a day after he called on European nations to defend “Western civilisation" and support US President Donald Trump’s vision for a “renewal" of the world order. He stressed that Europe and the United States share deep historical ties but must also take responsibility for their own defence.
