Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has taken a sharp dig at Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, accusing him of prioritising domestic politics over regional security as tensions flare over Budapest’s stance on the war.
In remarks that quickly grabbed headlines, Zelenskyy said Orban was “only growing his belly, not his army", a pointed criticism seen as targeting Hungary’s reluctance to ramp up military preparedness or deepen its support for Kyiv.
Growing Frictions Within Europe
The fresh exchange underscores widening divisions within the European Union over the war in Ukraine, now entering its third year since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in 2022.
While most EU nations have backed military aid packages and sanctions against Moscow, Hungary has repeatedly slowed or blocked certain measures, arguing for negotiations and warning against further escalation. Orban has maintained a comparatively cordial relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin, drawing criticism from Kyiv and several Western capitals.
Budapest’s Position
Hungary has opposed additional EU funding mechanisms for Ukraine and has resisted calls to supply weapons directly. Orban has framed his approach as pragmatic, saying Hungary must prioritise its own economic stability and energy security.
His government has also questioned Ukraine’s treatment of ethnic Hungarians in western Ukraine, an issue Budapest frequently cites in its disputes with Kyiv.
Kyiv’s Message
Zelenskyy’s comments signal growing impatience in Kyiv with what it sees as obstructionism from within Europe at a time when Ukraine is pushing for sustained military and financial backing.
The Ukrainian leader has consistently urged European allies to accelerate defence production and increase pressure on Moscow, warning that wavering support could embolden Russia.
Bigger Diplomatic Picture
The latest spat comes as EU leaders debate long-term security guarantees for Ukraine and fresh sanctions against Moscow. Hungary’s resistance has complicated efforts to present a unified European front.
Despite the rhetoric, analysts say both sides are unlikely to sever ties completely. Hungary remains an EU and NATO member, and Ukraine’s path toward EU membership will inevitably require engagement with Budapest.
For now, however, the war of words reflects deeper strategic disagreements and highlights the strain the conflict continues to place on European unity.
