Emails released by the US Justice Department show Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway exchanging warm and sometimes flippant messages with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein years after he pleaded guilty to soliciting sex from a minor.
The release of millions of pages of Epstein-related documents reveals a series of emails exchanged between the two from 2011 to 2013, suggesting a closer relationship than previously known.
In one exchange, after Epstein told her he was in Paris “on a wife hunt", Mette-Marit replied that the French capital was “good for adultery" and added that “Scandis [are] better wife material".
In other messages from 2012, the Crown Princess referred to Epstein as “sweetheart", “soft hearted" and “very charming".
One email shows Mette-Marit asking Epstein whether it would be “inappropriate for a mother to suggest two naked women carrying a surfboard for my 15 yr old son’s wallpaper?". Epstein replied: “Let them decide."
In 2011, Mette-Marit told Epstein she had “googled" him and said “it didn’t look too good", ending the sentence with a smiling emoji. The exchange took place three years after Epstein pleaded guilty in the US to soliciting a minor for prostitution.
The emails have triggered controversy in Norway after being made public as part of a wider release of Epstein-related documents by the US Justice Department more than a week ago.
The emails also reveal that in 2013 Mette-Marit stayed for several days at a property owned by Epstein in Palm Beach, Florida. Norwegian broadcaster NRK reported that the visit was arranged through a mutual friend.
In a statement issued on Friday, Norway’s royal house said the Crown Princess “strongly disavows Epstein’s abuse and criminal acts" and regrets “not having understood early enough what kind of person he was".
“Some of the content of the messages between Epstein and me does not represent the person I want to be. I also apologize for the situation that I have put the Royal Family in, especially the King and Queen," Mette-Marit’s statement noted.
