The United States Pentagon has formally asked the White House to back a budget request of over $200 billion directed at Congress to fund the ongoing war in Iran, according to a senior administration official cited by the Washington Post, with the proposal set to spark a fierce political battle on Capitol Hill.

The request follows three weeks of joint US-Israeli airstrikes that have hit thousands of targets across Iran, rapidly draining American stockpiles of precision weapons. The money is intended to cover war costs and push the domestic defence industry to produce munitions at a much faster rate.

Some White House officials, however, already doubt the figure stands any realistic chance of clearing Congress.

The bill for the war has climbed sharply since the conflict began. Speaking on the condition of anonymity, multiple officials told the Washington Post that the conflict cost over $11 billion in its first week alone.

That figure has continued to grow, making a supplemental funding request unavoidable if the military is to sustain operations without weakening its broader defence capabilities.

The effort to put together the funding proposal has been led inside the Pentagon by Deputy Defence Secretary Steven Feinberg, who has spent the past year focused on boosting the American defence industry and increasing the production of precision munitions.

According to two people familiar with the matter, Feinberg’s office drafted several different package sizes to address the shortage and try to move the at-times slow-moving industrial base.

The request is widely expected to meet resistance in Congress. Public backing for the war remains thin, and Democrats have been sharply critical of American involvement.

Republicans have signalled they support a supplemental spending bill in principle, but have not settled on a legislative path forward, and any measure in the Senate would need 60 votes to advance.

Analysts say the funding fight will serve as a direct gauge of how much appetite there is in Washington for the conflict. “If the administration asks for more money, there will be a big political fight because all the anti-war sentiment will focus on that request," said Mark Cancian, a senior adviser at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies.

Even if the money is approved, experts caution that cash alone cannot immediately solve the production problem. Elaine McCusker, the Pentagon’s former acting comptroller, says that pouring funds into the defence industry does not automatically speed up delivery, though withholding it guarantees delays.

The request lands as President Donald Trump separately pursues a $1.5 trillion total defence budget, a proposed increase of more than 50 per cent over the prior year.

White House insiders told the Washington Post that the White House’s own budget office has raised objections to that figure as well, suggesting significant internal disagreement over defence spending priorities.
