Europe Schengen Visa: Want to visit Europe from India? Here are five simple steps to apply for a Schengen visa with documents, fees, and travel tips.

The first step in applying for a Schengen visa from India is selecting the correct country through which to apply. A Schengen visa allows travel across multiple European countries in the Schengen zone, but your application must usually be submitted to the country where you will spend the most time during your trip. If you are spending equal time in several countries, then apply through the country you enter first. For example, if you are visiting France for four days and Italy for six days, you should apply through Italy. If you are entering France first and staying equal days in both, then apply through France.

Documents are one of the most important parts of a Schengen visa application from India. Missing papers, mismatched details, or weak financial proof can create delays or rejection. Most applicants need a valid passport with at least six months validity, passport-size photos matching Schengen specifications, confirmed travel itinerary, hotel bookings or invitation letter, round-trip flight reservation, travel insurance, bank statements, income tax returns, salary slips, and proof of employment or business.
Students may need college documents and sponsor papers. Self-employed applicants often submit GST returns, company registration, and business bank statements.

After collecting documents, the next step is booking an appointment with the relevant embassy partner or visa application center in India. Many Schengen countries process Indian applications through authorized centers in cities like New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Kolkata. Appointments can fill quickly during summer and holiday travel seasons, so booking early is wise. Many travelers apply four to six weeks before departure. At the appointment, you submit documents, passport, visa form, and biometric data. Biometrics usually include fingerprints and a photograph. If you have given biometrics recently for a Schengen visa, some applicants may have exemptions depending on rules and timing. Dress neatly, arrive early, and carry originals plus copies. Staff may check your file for completeness before accepting it.

A Schengen visa application includes a visa fee plus possible service charges from the application center. Fees can change, so always verify the latest amount before payment. Children, students, or special categories may have different fee structures depending on nationality and visa type. Payment methods vary by center and may include online payment, card, or cash.
After submission, the waiting period begins. Processing times depend on season, embassy workload, travel history, and whether extra checks are required. During peak travel months, waiting times may increase.

Once your passport is returned, check the visa details immediately. Ensure your name, passport number, validity dates, and number of entries are correct. If there is any error, contact the issuing center quickly. Now you can finalize your Europe travel plans. Book confirmed flights, internal train tickets, city stays, and day tours. Popular first-time routes for Indians include France, Italy, Switzerland, and Netherlands combinations. Carry copies of hotel bookings, return tickets, travel insurance, and proof of funds while traveling. Border officers in Europe may request these documents on arrival.
