Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday held talks with Iceland Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir, focusing on expanding cooperation in clean energy, sustainability, trade and the blue economy as India deepens engagement with Nordic countries.

The meeting took place in Oslo ahead of the third India-Nordic Summit, which brought together leaders from India, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Sweden.

After the meeting with Frostadóttir, PM Modi described the talks as “wonderful" and said India highly values its friendship with Iceland.

“We talked about ways to improve ties in areas such as clean energy, fisheries, sustainability, geothermal energy, carbon capture and storage and more," PM Modi wrote in a post on X.

The prime minister also praised Iceland’s expertise in the blue economy, saying cooperation in the sector could further strengthen bilateral ties. He added that the recently signed India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA) is expected to boost trade and investment links between the two countries.

“Iceland’s prowess in sectors relating to the Blue Economy is admirable. We are hopeful that the historic India-EFTA TEPA will give an impetus to trade and investment linkages as well," he wrote.

According to Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the leaders reviewed the overall progress in bilateral relations and discussed cooperation in renewable energy, innovation, digital technologies, Arctic affairs and people-to-people exchanges.

This was the first meeting between PM Modi and Frostadóttir since the Icelandic leader assumed office.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the two leaders also exchanged views on regional and global developments of mutual interest. PM Modi also invited Frostadóttir to visit India at a mutually convenient time.

Alongside his meeting with the Icelandic prime minister, PM Modi also held separate talks with the leaders of Finland and Denmark. Discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in clean energy, trade, sustainability, digitalisation and emerging technologies.
