Trump also claimed he was “100% confident” that Iran would eventually stop enriching uranium and hand over its enriched material to the US.

US President Donald Trump on Monday said there was “no need to rush" negotiations with Iran despite growing uncertainty around the fragile ceasefire between Washington and Tehran, which he earlier warned was on “life support" after rejecting Iran’s latest proposal.

“It’s a question of time, we don’t have to rush anything," Trump said during an interview on New York’s TalkRadio 77 WABC.

“We wiped out their navy, their air force… We have a blockade which allows them no money. It’s a very simple thing: we cannot let them have a nuclear weapon — because they’d use it," he added.

Trump also claimed he was “100% confident" that Iran would eventually stop enriching uranium and hand over its enriched material to the United States.

His remarks come after he sharply criticised Tehran’s latest counter-proposal to a US-backed peace framework, calling the response “garbage" and “totally unacceptable".

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said the ceasefire that has largely halted fighting between the two sides for over a month was becoming increasingly unstable.

“It’s unbelievably weak," Trump said when asked whether the truce was still holding. “I would call it the weakest, right now, after reading that piece of garbage they sent us. I didn’t even finish reading it. I said, they’re going to waste my time reading it. I would say it’s one of the weakest, right now, it’s on life support."

Iran had submitted its proposal in response to an earlier American plan, reportedly a one-page memorandum aimed at ending hostilities and setting up negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear programme.

According to Iranian officials, the response demanded an end to military operations across the region, including in Lebanon, the lifting of the US naval blockade on Iranian ports and the release of Iranian assets frozen under sanctions.

The conflict, which began more than two months ago following US-Israeli strikes on Iran, has destabilised large parts of the Middle East and disrupted global energy markets despite repeated diplomatic efforts to prevent a wider regional war.

While both Washington and Tehran continue to threaten renewed military action, neither side has yet signalled a willingness to return to full-scale conflict.
