Several synagogues and residences in the New York borough of Queens have been vandalised with swastikas, officials said. This comes months after after two teenagers were arrested for allegedly painting swastikas on a playground in Brooklyn.
In a post on X, city council speaker Julie Menin said: “Multiple synagogues and private homes in Queens were vandalized overnight with swastikas and other antisemitic graffiti."
She said that along with other city council members including Lynn Schulman and Phil Wong she visited Congregation Machane Chodosh, one of the sites that was attacked.

“When rabbis and congregants arrived to pray this morning, they expected to be met with their usual loving community. When a family woke up, they were prepared to begin an otherwise normal week. Instead, they were met with terrifying signals of hatred and threats of violence," Menin said.
She further said the NYPD has also visited the sites and are “searching for at least four individuals responsible for the terrible incidents. The graffiti will be removed once the investigation is complete".
The speaker also shared photos of sites that were marked with swastika signs.
According to The Guardian, the sites included the Rego Park Jewish Center, which was spray-painted with swastikas alongside the word “Hitler" in red paint.
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani has also issued a statement condemning the incident. “This is not just vandalism – it is a deliberate act of antisemitic hatred meant to instill fear," he said. “There is no place for antisemitism in Queens or anywhere in our city."
“I stand in solidarity with our Jewish neighbors. Their safety, dignity and belonging are non-negotiable," he added.
Similar incident was reported in January when two teenagers were arrested and charged with hate crimes after dozens of swastikas were found painted on a playground in Brooklyn, according to The Guardian.
