JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon revealed details about his private meeting with New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, saying he delivered a blunt message on housing, taxes and governance while warning against ideology-driven policymaking.
Speaking to Fox News, Jamie Dimon described the face-to-face meeting with Zohran Mamdani as “pleasant" and “earnest," but made clear that he used the opportunity to directly challenge some of the mayor’s policy instincts.
“He was very polite. It was very earnest. We had a very good conversation, but I said everything I wanted to say," Jamie Dimon said.
The Wall Street executive said the discussion focused heavily on affordable housing and childcare- two pillars of Zohran Mamdani’s progressive economic agenda- while cautioning that ambitious social programs could fail if executed poorly.
“Most people want it. If you do it badly, it would be a disaster," Jamie Dimon said, adding, “Do it right. There are studies that can tell you how to do it right. Get people who know what they’re doing and implement proper policies."
Jamie Dimon, who grew up in Queens and has led JPMorgan Chase for two decades, argued that policymaking- rather than simply raising taxes or increasing spending- should be the priority for city leaders.
“Good policy is free," he said, adding, “I feel like telling the politicians, ‘Don’t try to raise more taxes or spend more money, sit down and fix policy.’"
The remarks come as Zohran Mamdani faces growing scrutiny from business leaders over his left-wing economic proposals, including a proposed pied-à-terre tax targeting second homes valued above $1 million.
Zohran Mamdani has sparked controversy in recent weeks over his criticism of luxury real estate and billionaire wealth. One widely discussed moment involved the mayor filming a promotional video for the proposed housing tax outside a penthouse owned by hedge fund billionaire Ken Griffin. Ken Griffin later criticized the move as “creepy" and announced plans to expand Citadel’s operations further in Florida instead of New York. He also suggested uncertainty around future investments tied to a planned $6 billion Park Avenue development.
Asked about the episode, Jamie Dimon appeared to suggest the mayor may have overplayed the stunt.
“My guess is he probably regrets that," Dimon said, before adding, “but you got to ask him that." The JPMorgan chief also raised concerns about Zohran Mamdani’s lack of executive experience, noting the scale of responsibility attached to running America’s largest city.
“He’s running the city with 300,000 employees now," Jamie Dimon said, explaining, “And I’ve seen mayors who just fail abysmally because they can’t administer themselves out of a paper bag, or ideology blinds them to practical, realistic, real-world policy."
