A Singapore Airlines flight made a jaw-clenching landing in Adelaide this week as fierce crosswinds rocked the aircraft just moments before touchdown. Caught on camera, the jet can be seen wobbling sharply from side to side, its wings tilting dramatically as it battled gusty winds during a storm on Monday (May 27).

Despite the turbulence and tension inside the cabin, the pilots held their nerve and executed a textbook landing that had aviation watchers and passengers alike holding their breath.

Social media users while commenting on the now-viral video highlighted that these videos are a reminder of the split-second decisions pilots make to keep flights safe.

The video was shared by Adelaide based 7News and Singaporean broadcaster ChannelNewsAsia. Below ChannelNewsAsia Instagram video of the incident several Singaporeans said that the video acts as a “good PR" for the airliner.

“It’s Singapore Airlines! They’re in good hands," wrote Instagram user @guynamedgun. “This news is a good promotion, bravo!" commented @roseoscha.

Crosswind landings are among the most technically demanding manoeuvres in aviation, often requiring pilots to use a method known as “crabbing" where the aircraft approaches the runway at an angle to counteract wind direction. In the final moments before touchdown the pilot must carefully align the aircraft with the runway using the rudder and ailerons. Precision and timing are everything.

These landings are standard training for commercial pilots but during intense weather events they can become white-knuckle moments for even seasoned aviators.

Similar dramatic landings have made headlines before, such as the Lufthansa A320 struggling to land in Düsseldorf during a storm in 2019 or the Emirates Boeing 777’s near-sideways touchdown in Birmingham in 2015. These moments, often caught on video, show the level of skill and calm required by pilots under pressure.

Pilots achieve this skill through a mix of rigorous simulator training, real-world flying hours and routine checks that test their handling of extreme weather scenarios. From early flight school days, they’re taught to manage crosswinds, turbulence and emergency landings using controlled techniques. Advanced simulators replicate dangerous conditions without real-world risk, allowing pilots to practice over and over.

Airlines also conduct recurrent training every few months to keep these skills sharp. Only after passing multiple evaluations and gaining thousands of flying hours are pilots trusted to handle tough landings.
