FBI Official Michael Glasheen managed to amuse much of social media on Thursday just by fumbling one simple question to Congress.
The operations director of the national security branch of the FBI managed to make a huge gaffe during a House Committee on Homeland Security hearing.
During his testimony, Glasheen called antifa “the most immediate violent threat we’re facing,” a claim that supports President Donald Trump’s decision in September to declare the movement a “terrorist organization.”
However, it’s a dubious claim, especially since previous FBI Director Christopher Wray told lawmakers in 2020 that antifa “is not a group or an organization. It’s a movement or an ideology.”
But Glasheen became flustered when Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) asked him to back up the statement with actual facts, such as the location of antifa’s headquarters.
“We are building out the infrastructure right now,” Glasheen responded.
Thompson was confused and asked, “What does that mean?” before pointing out, “We’re trying to get information. You said antifa is a terrorist organization. Tell us, as a committee, how did you come to that? Do they exist? How many members do they have in the United States as of right now?”
Glasheen tried to weasel out of specifics, telling Thompson, “Well, that’s very fluid.”
He also didn’t have a good response when Thompson asked how many people the FBI had identified as antifa members.
“Well, the investigations are active,” Glasheen said.
Thompson wasn’t impressed.
“Sir, you wouldn’t come to this committee and say something you can’t prove. I know you wouldn’t do that, but you did,” he said.
GLASHEEN: Antifa is our primary concern right now. That's the most immediate violent threat we're facing
BENNIE THOMPSON: Where is antifa headquartered?

Although Glasheen’s incoherent response didn’t make him look good, many people on social media noted that it revealed the extent that Trump’s administration is botching homeland security.
If your “top threat” has no headquarters, no organization, and no definition then it’s not a top threat.⁰⁰The Trump administration is ignoring real threats, and the American people see right through it. https://t.co/J1tiLgsnrj
— Homeland Security Committee Democrats (@HomelandDems) December 11, 2025Antifa is ‘anti fascism.’ It is a believe system. There is no ‘headquarters.’ It’s like being pro democracy. Pro constitution. Anti dictator. Use those brain cells. Our gov should be working on affordability and child pedos. Not the nonsense - and it’s NONSENSE. https://t.co/J8GOYE4a3c
— Rebecca Bradshaw Bond (@RebeccaBond007) December 11, 2025Total amateur hour in U.S. law enforcement, where the number one terror threat is an organization that does not formally exist and a career #FBI official is dancing around before a congressional committee trying to make the Trump strategy sound legit. https://t.co/6omhBxxQ0T
— Matthew Kupfer (@Matthew_Kupfer) December 11, 2025Trump has the most incompetent people installed in our government. This is absolutely embarrassing. “We are building out the infrastructure right now” is no different than Trump talking about concepts of a plan with healthcare. All lies. https://t.co/BVz8PkcGGY
— Henry Lake (@lakeshow73) December 11, 2025This would be comical if there wasn’t real world impact from this idiocy. We have real crimes and real threats and they are chasing a fake “organization” for politics. https://t.co/AU7tmRR4Ji
— Fred Wellman (@FPWellman) December 11, 2025Some people snarkily helped the FBI by offering hints where antifa headquarters might be located — by pointing out service members who actually fought against fascism.
In case anyone at the DOJ reads my feed, I want to offer a little patriotic help to you in your search for the headquarters of Antifa.
It's in Arlington National Cemetery. pic.twitter.com/62cZCQ48mZ
