Spain will repatriate foreign passengers from a luxury cruise ship hit by a deadly Hantavirus outbreak after it docks in Tenerife in the Canary Islands, Health Minister Mónica García said on Wednesday.
Garcia said all remaining passengers onboard are currently asymptomatic. Non-Spanish nationals will be allowed to return to their home countries without undergoing quarantine in Spain, with further health measures to be decided by their respective governments.
However, 14 Spanish passengers will be flown to Madrid and placed under medical observation and quarantine at a hospital as a precaution.
What Is Hantavirus?
Hantavirus is a rare but potentially deadly viral infection primarily spread through contact with infected rodents or exposure to their urine, droppings or saliva.
Humans can contract the virus by inhaling contaminated particles, especially in enclosed or poorly ventilated environments. It does not typically spread easily from person to person.
Early symptoms often resemble the flu—fever, muscle aches, fatigue and headaches—but can rapidly progress to severe respiratory distress known as Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS), which can be life-threatening.
The cruise ship had earlier reported cases linked to the virus, prompting heightened health protocols and monitoring. Spanish authorities said they are coordinating closely with international health agencies to ensure safe disembarkation and prevent further spread.
The incident has raised fresh concerns over infectious disease risks linked to global travel, even as officials stress that current passengers show no symptoms and the situation is under control.
