A Thai-flagged bulk carrier bound for India came under attack in the Strait of Hormuz, setting part of the vessel ablaze and triggering an emergency rescue operation as the war between Iran and the United States continues to destabilise one of the world’s most critical maritime corridors.

The vessel, Mayuree Naree, had departed Khalifa Port in the United Arab Emirates and was en route to Kandla port in Gujarat when it was struck by an unknown projectile while transiting the narrow Gulf shipping lane.

The Royal Thai Navy confirmed the attack, releasing images showing thick black smoke billowing from the ship’s hull and superstructure, with life rafts visible in the water as crew members evacuated the burning vessel.

The Mayuree Naree is a 178-metre bulk carrier with a displacement of approximately 30,000 tonnes, owned by Bangkok-listed transport company Precious Shipping Pcl.

Rescue Operation Underway, Three Still Missing

Oman navy launched a swift rescue operation following the strike. Twenty crew members were pulled to safety after abandoning ship and evacuating by lifeboat. The survivors were brought ashore at Khasab, a port town on Oman’s Musandam Peninsula at the mouth of the strait. Authorities said the fire onboard was later brought under control, though the full extent of damage to the vessel remains unclear.

“The specific details and cause of the attack are currently under investigation," the Royal Thai Navy said in a statement.

Earlier in the day, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported that a cargo vessel had been struck by an unknown projectile approximately 11 nautical miles north of Oman, causing a fire onboard. The agency urged all vessels transiting the region to exercise heightened caution and report any suspicious activity to authorities.

The attack on the Mayuree Naree is the latest in a string of maritime incidents rocking the Strait of Hormuz- the narrow waterway between Oman and Iran through which roughly a fifth of the world’s oil supply flows daily.

Shipping traffic through the strait has already dropped sharply, with several operators diverting vessels away from the area entirely.
