Russia has warned Romania and other European countries to prepare for more drone-related incidents after a suspected Russian drone crashed into a residential apartment building in the NATO member state, injuring two civilians and triggering strong condemnation from the alliance.
The warning came from Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council and a close ally of President Vladimir Putin, who said Europeans should not expect such incidents to stop as long as they continue supporting Ukraine in its war against Moscow.
“Let them get ready: this will continue to happen," Medvedev said, arguing that European countries were directly involved in the conflict by supplying Ukraine with drones, weapons and intelligence. He added that citizens of European countries “will not be able to sleep peacefully" while the war continues.
His remarks came hours after Romania said a drone it identified as Russian struck the roof of a 10-storey apartment building in the southeastern city of Galați, near the Ukrainian border. Romanian authorities said a woman and a child suffered minor injuries after the drone exploded on impact and sparked a fire.
The incident marked one of the most serious spillovers of the Ukraine war into NATO territory since Russia’s invasion began in 2022. Romanian officials said radar systems tracked the drone entering national airspace before it hit the building. Fighter jets were scrambled, but the drone struck before it could be intercepted.
NATO responded by accusing Moscow of reckless behaviour and reaffirming its commitment to defend alliance territory.
“NATO will defend every inch of Allied territory," the alliance said, while Secretary General Mark Rutte expressed solidarity with Romania and condemned the drone strike.
Romania reacted sharply by closing the Russian consulate in the Black Sea city of Constanța and expelling Russia’s consul. Moscow has vowed to respond to the move.
Russian officials, however, denied responsibility. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said President Putin had been briefed on the incident, while Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova dismissed accusations that Russian drones were flying into European territory as unproven.
The latest episode comes amid a sharp rise in drone incursions along NATO’s eastern flank. Romania has repeatedly reported Russian drones breaching its airspace during attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure near the border. Earlier this year, Romanian authorities recovered drone fragments in Galați and Tulcea regions after similar incidents.
According to Romanian defence data, 2026 is already shaping up to be a record year for drone-related security incidents, with multiple airspace violations, discovery of drone debris and repeated scrambling of fighter jets reported in the first few months alone.
The latest strike has intensified concerns that the Ukraine war is increasingly spilling into neighbouring NATO countries, raising fears of miscalculation and broader escalation across Europe.
