A top Pakistani cleric has warned the Shehbaz Sharif government against US President Donald Trump’s potential visit to Islamabad for a new round of peace talks with Iran, describing him as a “wretched person".

Maulana Syed Jawad Naqvi, a senior Pakistani Shia scholar who heads the Lahore-based seminary Jamia Urwat-ul-Wusqa, condemned the US-Israeli military campaign against Iran and warned against Trump’s visit to Islamabad.

‘Pakistan Shouldn’t Make Him A Hero’

“It is not an honour for Trump to come to Pakistan. He is a wretched person, a false messiah, and a sinner," he was quoted as saying by the IRIB News Agency. Naqvi also highlighted the international opposition to the war in Iran and said he should not be given a hero’s welcome in Pakistan.

“Europe, NATO, and even the United States itself curse Trump. Pakistan should not make him a hero. He should not be able to stand tall against Pakistan, Iran, or the Islamic Ummah," he said, while warning the Pakistani leadership against aligning too closely with Trump’s objectives.

“Pakistan has gained this opportunity. We pray that God gives Pakistan’s leaders the courage not to make mistakes and not to try to make Trump successful in these negotiations. They should not try to satisfy or please him," he added.

Will Trump Visit Islamabad?

Last week, Trump said that if a deal with Iran to end the war is reached and signed in Islamabad, he might visit Islamabad, as he struck an optimistic tone about the ongoing negotiations with Tehran.

A proposed visit by a US delegation led by Vice President JD Vance has been called off as Iran signalled reluctance to attend the second round of talks in Islamabad due to the US Navy blockade in the critical chokepoint of the Strait of Hormuz. Trump has indefinitely extended the ceasefire with Iran, but refused to remove the blockade.

Trump has now clarified that Vance will not be part of the American delegation, citing last-minute security constraints. The US delegation would now be led by key figures, including US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.

Trump has framed the negotiations as Iran’s “last chance" to reach an agreement, issuing stark warnings about potential military consequences if diplomacy fails. Iran has vowed to respond to any US aggression.
