US President Donald Trump on Thursday announced the formation of a Gaza "board of peace," a key phase two element of a US-backed plan to end the war in the Palestinian territory.

"It is my Great Honor to announce that THE BOARD OF PEACE has been formed. The Members of the Board will be announced shortly, but I can say with certainty that it is the Greatest and Most Prestigious Board ever assembled at any time, any place. Thank you for your attention to this matter!," Trump posted on his Truth Social platform.

Trump had proposed the Board of Peace last year as a transitional governing body supervising Gaza’s reconstruction as well as overseeing a technocratic panel of Palestinian leaders.

The board is expected to feature international figures, including representation from Arab states, and Trump has put himself forward as its chair.

Trump had previously said former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair would be on the panel, but the British leader stepped away from the project, amid criticism.

The board itself has faced pushback for appearing to impose foreign leadership on Gaza, with no plan for an independent Palestinian state.
